According to The Times Tribune, Tropical Storm Lee caused many problems, especially for local businesses. It has been reported that in Northeast Pennsylvania, nearly every manufacturer in six counties were impacted directly or indirectly.
The Industrial Resource Center showed the damage caused more than $65 million in direct flood-related losses and indirect impacts are estimated to be $28 million to more than $47 million in Federal Emergency Management Agency-declared disaster areas.
In total, there is nearly $113 million of sustained flood-related impacts, creating an extreme need for recovery assistance. In addition, the study said 1,954 manufacturing jobs are at risk due to continued closures as a result of the flood.
"The scale of the damage caused by the flooding is truly unprecedented," Eric Joseph Esoda, executive director of the Industrial Resource Center, said. "With so many companies hurt by this flooding, it only makes a successful recovery effort even more vital to the economic well-being of our region."
Direct impact was defined as significant damage to the manufacturing facility, damage to equipment, loss of inventory, and/or productive capacity beyond 15 days. Indirect impact is defined as temporary disruption in production due to issues affecting the manufacturer's workforce, vendors, customers, transportation, and utilities.
